Director: Anne Fontaine. Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Finnegan Oldfield, Gregory Gadebois. Duration: 115 min

Anne Fontaine’s powerful new film, winner of the Queer Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival, explores the painful relationship a young gay man has with his past. Marvin grows up in a gruff and boorish family in rural France. He’s artistically inclined, also attracted to other boys in his class, and as a result is the victim of bullying both at school and at home. Later, at drama school in Paris, he is able to reinvent himself, but his childhood experiences still haunt and call to him. A poignant and perceptive portrait of a young boy’s coming of age and coming out from the director of The Innocents. The film stars Finnegan Oldfield and Isabelle Huppert whimsically playing herself.
