As part of our Enchanted Screen season, we’re taking our Pop Up cinema back on the road. In honour of our hosts at the Puppet Theatre, we’re showing a double bill of films full of masterful puppetry. The Wizard of Oz’s groundbreaking practical effects are still dazzling nearly 80 years on, whilst The Dark Crystal showcases the muppet masters Jim Henson and Frank Oz at their best.
Doors will open around 45 mins before each film. Hot chocolate and a range of delicious snacks will be on hand to see you through the evening!
The Wizard of Oz (U)
Director: Victor Fleming. Starring: Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley. 1939 103 mins
The famous film of 1939 begins in the monochrome world of Kansas but bursts into colour when Dorothy’s house, uprooted in a terrible tornado, lands in the surreal fairyland of Oz where Dorothy and her dog Toto encounter three new friends: the brainless Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the heartless Tin Man, each in search of what he believes he is lacking. The film’s ostensible message is that ‘There’s no place like home’: Dorothy’s mythic journey seems to reveal that to find one’s heart’s desire, one need not look further than one’s own backyard.5:00pm
The Dark Crystal (U)
Directors: Jim Henson, Frank Oz. Voices: Jim Henson, Kathryn Mullen, Frank Oz. 1982. 92 mins.
Jim Henson’s animatronic cult fantasy movie is visually stunning and a triumph of the imagination. Another planet, another time. One thousand years ago, the Dark Crystal was damaged by one of the Urskeks and an age of chaos began. Now the time of the great conjunction of the three suns is near. If the Crystal is not healed now, the evil Skekses will have control forever. Jen, the last of the Gelfings nearly exterminated by monsters controlled by the Skekses, starts his dangerous journey to find the missing shard of the Crystal.7:30pm
