EVERYONE IS DIVINE! at Hackney Picturehouse

Now open at the Hackney Picturehouse Gallery: Everyone is Divine! a photography exhibition from Darren Evans.

Everyone is Divine! is a celebration of the brash and glamorous punk movie icon Divine, who starred in many of John Waters’ important and subversive films. The films gave power and a voice to people who identified with their portrayal of outsiders and ‘shitkickers.’

This series of 20 photographs by Darren Evans explores the sitters’ connection with Divine. The diversity of people photographed, all with the trademark Divine look, makes us wonder who is behind the make-up as the gender binary is playfully subverted and questioned. Referencing Divine’s distinctive make-up allows the sitters to access their own inner gender rebel.

Darren Evans has been working for 25 years in London as a freelance hair and make-up artist in fashion, film and television. In the last three years, he has been following a passion for photography, focusing on portraits of friends and people from all walks of life, including London’s vibrant Queer cabaret scene.

Come check out the free exhibition until October 28 at Hackney Picturehouse Exhibition space.
