EAST OF PUNK

MilkTea collaborates exclusively with Picturehouse Cinemas, with a programme featuring special screenings of Linda Linda Linda and In Waves.

Punk didn't stay in the UK. It travelled to Japan, where a generation of young people transformed it into an enduring subculture that continues to resonate with Japanese and East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) diasporic youth today. Developed in response to the BFI's Rip It Up season, EAST OF PUNK is a three-event season that takes that journey as its starting point, before broadening into something larger: what it means to grow up British and ESEA today, shaped by cultures that have travelled, shifted, mixed, and been made into something new.

We begin with Linda Linda Linda (2005), which follows a Japanese high school band covering The Blue Hearts – a band shaped by the UK punk scene – in the days before their school festival, and it's a clear example of what this season is all about: one culture crossing borders and being remade into something fresh and new. Our screening will be followed by a panel discussion, curated by Ashley Alcaide.

We continue with a special preview screening of In Waves, taking us away from Japan and punk, into the wider world of ESEA youth culture today in America: from skateboarding and surfing, to everyday life.

We close the programme with our short film showcase: Mixtape: The Youth Edition, platforming new work by British ESEA filmmakers reflecting on what it means to be young. A post screening filmmaker Q&A will be moderated by Margaret Sam, ESEA Founder and Fashion Designer who explores identity and heritage through SUM LONDON - a British-Asian Heritage brand.

MilkTea shows the best of East & Southeast Asian cinema in the UK. Our work begins with screenings, but our goal is to build inclusion, communities & audiences.
